Continuing my project documenting Yolo County, today I shot the train station in downtown Davis (erected in 1913) and the surrounding railway. After assuring the officer who approached me shortly after I began shooting that I was not, in fact, a terrorist, I think I got some good shots. The clouds from the morning's rain made for some really excellent skies, something that tends to be rather flat in the summertime; and while it wasn't a terribly busy afternoon, I did manage to get a few travelers in some of the shots. Enjoy!

The Cold Fire between Lake Berryessa and Winters continued today, moving northerly and growing from 2,200 acres at 6:00am this morning to 4,600 acres by 7:00pm this evening. Mop-up efforts took place along 128 throughout the day, as firefighters battled the fire's northward movement. Sunflowers are one of those notable crops grown in Yolo county and surrounding areas. When you pass by the fields while they're in bloom it's really quite stunning, especially as the fields can be so massive.
Last week I drove to the outskirts of town to shoot a field of sunflowers at sunset. The bloom season is usually late June or early July, and while I was a bit late on catching them during full bloom, I think they do have a special quality during their wilting. |
